Washington County ARES, call sign WN1EOC, works with local officials and the ARRL - the national association for amateur radio - to train, prepare, and provide emergency backup communications and publice service communications when needed.
Washington County ARES and ARES/RACES teams statewide stepped up and responded with efficiency and professionalism during the Sep 16, 2023 storm. WCARES was activated throughout the storm and staffed the EOC in Machias during the daylight hours. Several challenges were thrown our way, but we adapted and conquered them! At one point during widespread outages and some taxing of the existing communications systems, WCARES had to relay an ICS-213 from Washington County EMA to Maine Emergency Management Agency via Winlink, and also the Maine Emergency Communications Net facilitaed comms between MEMA and WN1EOC. Well done all!
Maine's annual Simulated Emergency Test is scheduled for Oct 27-28, 2023. More details coming soon. A planning meeting will be held at the EOC in Machias date TBD.
